This is a discussion we should be having more often and among more people – scientists and non-scientists, alike. The problem with the GMO debate is that many a time it gets confused with the issue of Big-Ag (Big Agricultural companies like Monsanto, Dupont and Pioneer) and their practices.

To say that Big-Ag industries have many issues, would be a massive understatement. The seeds (of the GMO crops) produced by these companies have terminator technology, meaning, they cannot be used to generate more seeds. This makes the farmers dangerously reliant on the companies and their profiteering practices. Secondly, there’s the murky and cut-throat world of Intellectual Property (IP). Citing IP rights, these companies do not divulge any information about their seeds’ germplasm (the genetic information, if you may). So, the farmer is forced to trust the company (with its massively vested interests) blindly and hopes that the advertised characteristics of the seeds turn out to be true. Unfortunately, many a time, the different varieties of seeds for a particular crop that are sold by a company, turn out to be almost identical germplasm (meaning the same seeds, just marketed under a different name). This lack of transparency and absence of ethical practices is extremely troubling and will plague any agricultural product, GMO or otherwise, and this unfortunately gets lumped with the “dangers of GMO” debate.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08846910407898237375noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3246221050835054863.post-43610576199492879182017-12-13T05:23:11.102-08:002017-12-13T05:23:11.102-08:00Yay! :)
